BRIGHOUSE TOWN 8 – 0 DROYLSDEN

EvoStik NPL Division One (North)

Monday 15 February 2016

By Gary Owen

On a night where Droylsden were looking to recover from their drubbing at Northwich 2 days earlier, The Bloods’ defence went AWOL on too many occasions to give their hosts an easy ride in West Yorkshire, resulting in another eight goals being shipped, only this time with no reply for the chilly Bloods’ faithful to cheer.

Sam Hewitt was first on the scoresheet, heading home from a corner as Droylsden had only seven outfield defenders in the box.  Six minutes later, it was 2-0 as Ryan Hall held off the attentions of Ben Barber before rounding Steve James to score.

Hall almost benefitted from a poor ball by Jacob Wood, only for James to come to the rescue.

Droylsden put their hosts under some pressure with Dominic Smith seeing his shot turned away for a corner, but from that flag kick, Town broke away on the counter attack, and the ball ran kindly for Tom Haigh to poke through James’s legs for the third.

Sam Gibson then struck the Town upright for Droylsden, but another slip by Wood saw a chance for 10 with James again saving.  However, Hall punished more sloppy play in the Droylsden defence to make it 4-0 with over half an hour left to play.

Isaac Baldwin hit a neat volley from a corner with James saving, but moments later Tom Robinson beat the offside trap to put a cute lob over James for the fifth.

Ben Hampson blocked a shot on the line, but it was soon 6-0 when Connah Judson caught James off his line with a sublime effort, and Baldwin’s volleyed corner this time came off a la Paul Scholes for a cracking seventh.

James saved one-on-one from Hall, and Robinson rounded the Droylsden keep, but could then only hit the post!  Kurt Harris made it another 8 goals against with a minute remaining, to leave Droylsden with the prospect of facing league leaders Warrington Town with one of the leakiest defences in history!
